Read a bit of the diary entries. It didn't seem to me like he was a villain as much as overwhelmed by all the sycophantic garbage that the press was saying about him. He was a puppy dog for all that adulation and the combination with the fact that he didn't want to face his own culpability as a big gain of function research booster pushed him over the edge. I can't imagine he still doesn't know that the virus came from the institute, but I'm sure he can't face it in public.
